Prevention Month- Day 21

Lord, I think of those on the front lines of this battle today- the house parents, the tireless organization heads, the missionaries, the diplomats, the liasons, the believers with brothels or truck stops right in their neighborhoods. I ask you to strengthen them, and give them even more of a voice and an influence in their spheres. Don’t let them tire of doing good, and remind them that they will reap a harvest if they do not lose heart. (Gal. 6:9)

Prevention Month- Day 18

Being up all night with Kenan was dark, and not just outside. It was all I could do not to fall into that mom-of-a-newborn panic that thinks, I will never sleep again! I prayed You would help me not to get angry or impatient when the night began, knowing that he would likely be up, be miserable, be needy. Thank You for answering, and allowing my soul to remain in relative peace. Darkness of night is such an absorbent thing, making me think things are true that really are not. It is for those in a much worse darkness that I pray today- the darkness of evil that literally has them mastered right now. And, like any night, they may wonder when, or if, the morning will ever come. Kenan was still miserable when morning came, but just this afternoon has appeared to turn a corner for the better with his illness. I pray that You will give these in the darkness the strength to keep on watching for the dawn, but even after that to keep on searching for You. Their circumstances may not change right away, but You can make the darkness into light.

Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You. Psalm 139:12

Prevention Month- Day 17

I just woke from a bad dream- two of my children were killed in a horrible accident. It was only a dream, but countless parents and loved ones are living through a nightmare as I type this. Some may have lost a child to the sex trade never to see them again, others still have their child but are getting dangerously close to a point where they may. Lord, bring Your peace into these families today. Those that still have some control over their situations, please allow them to continue to find means to support themselves, or bring someone alongside who can help. Please let this nightmare be one we can wake up from soon and live in the light of Your day.

Prevention Month- Day 16

For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him? Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today? Deuteronomy 4:7,8

There is no one like You, O God, therefore there is no nation, no people like those who call upon the living God who can say they know You, really know You. Your heart is kind. Your heart is for the orphan, the widow, the poor, the helpless, the underprivileged, the forgotten, the loser, the failure. I’m so glad. You’re on my side. Actually, I am on Your side, because of the work of Your Son, and am forever in Your debt.

I worship You, Almighty God

there is none like You

Prevention Month- Day 15

Lord, I read about the Syrophonecian woman this morning, and how her faith in You drew her close to You and made her plea for her daughter’s healing more persistent. I love how she mirrored Hebrews 11:6- And without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Move in the hearts of Your people today to come close to You, and be diligent in seeking You in prayer. You promise to be found by those who seek You with all of their hearts. All this to say, Lord, burden my heart with the plight of millions of those suffering from the ills of slavery, burden it to the point that I must come close to You, fall at Your feet, and intercede for them with persistence. I don’t want to let the opportunity to love them this way, or the opportunity to know You better through the drawing near, to pass me by.

Prevention Month- Day 13

I’ve heard stories, Lord, of parents in extremely poor countries, who are left with the choice of starving, or selling their child. I’m praying for parents like these today. Please, Father, open their eyes to the reality of what they are doing, guide them to make good choices for their children, and please open doors of opportunity that they might not see where they can obtain what they need to continue living. Protect those who cannot protect themselves, and arm Your people with compassion and an awareness of whom we can be protecting, and supporting.

Prevention Month- Day 12

Holy is Your name, O LORD. Your mercy is upon generation after generation toward those who fear You. You have done mighty deeds with Your arm; You have scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. You have brought down rulers from their thrones, and have exalted those who were humble. You have filled the hungry with good things, and sent away the rich empty-handed. You have given help to Israel Your servant, in remembrance of Your mercy.

from Luke 1

Remember Your mercy, O LORD. Remember Your promise to hear our cry, and come to the aid of those who are caught in slavery. Send those who might rescue them, or show them a way out, or destroy the system that holds them as prisoner. That Your great name may be known in the earth, Amen.

Prevention Month- Day 11

O Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; for You have worked wonders, plans formed long ago with perfect faithfulness.

Therefore a strong people will glorify You; cities of ruthless nations will revere You.

For You have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a rain storm against a wall.

Like heat in drought, You subdue the uproar of aliens; like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is silenced.

The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; a banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, and refined, aged wine.

And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which is over all peoples, even the veil which is stretched over all nations.

He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, and He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.

from Isaiah 25

Lord, I remember as a kid being so hot, then getting to go swimming, and how good it felt to be in that cool water. Afterward we’d sit almost chilled now in our air conditioned house around our dinner table, and the food that night would taste especially good after a time in the pool. Our beds would feel extra soft and comfortable, too, and we never had trouble getting to sleep. This is what I picture when I read these verses, only the heat of evil in this world is so much hotter and the cool of Your touch and the breadth of the feast You are preparing is so much better than I could ever imagine. Can’t wait to get there. Show me all the ones You want me to bring along.

Prevention Month- Day 10

Today is my sister’s birthday, Lord, and I think about the many enslaved today that might share a birthday with her. Maybe their life is so dark right now that they might forget today is their birthday, forget any semblance of a normal life they might have once lived. I pray against this darkness, Lord, knowing Your light can chase the darkness away. Send someone to come alongside those in darkness who can share with them Your light and love. In Jesus’ name, because of Jesus, I pray, amen.

Prevention Month- Day 9

Father, I feel like I have gained some good perspective after thinking on the Lord’s Prayer, and being reminded that Your glory should be the ultimate goal of anything I do or pray. You have a plan, have had it since before the world began, and You will be faithful to carry it out, to Your everlasting glory. This is a comforting thought in the face of such evil going on in our world today. This is not how it will always be. Thank You for that.

“Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 ‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

[For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]
